Bowling
is an almost ideal sport. It
can be played by young and old, by athletes and spazes, by people in
almost any type of physical condition.
Some people can even drink when they bowl.
To learn more about this Sport of Kings, here
are some helpful links:
If you want to know virtually anything about
the sport, you can visit
bowl.com, the official site of the United States Bowling
Conference. Although the
design of the site suggests that maybe these guys are a little too
serious about bowling, it's chock-full of info on practically
anything you might want to know about rolling a ball down an alley.
There's also the site of the Professional
Bowlers' Association (pba.com),
where you can learn about people who make a living by bowling (the
next best thing to winning the lottery).
In addition to the approved information on
bowling from the suits employed by the above sources, your education
into the sport is not complete until you have watched a gem of a
movie by the multiple Academy Award winning duo of Joel and Ethan
Coen: The Big Lebowski.
This cult classic is often available on
hulu.com, but really,
you should own a copy.
Through its main character, The Dude, it captures the true Zen
nature of bowling, plus includes sub plots of a rug, a marmot, a
porn kingpin, and a writer of the TV show, Branded.
It is perhaps the zenith of American
cinematography. It is so
beloved that it has spawed a series of festivals, Lebowskifests, at
bowling alleys around the nation.
You really should own a copy.
We'll wait while you go out and buy one.
More info here. And here. And here. And here.
The movie even inspired its own religion, Dudeism, the slowest growing religion in the world. Become an ordained priest here.
